A survey by the well-respected German travel magazine Urlaub Perfekt has ranked Turkey the second most popular tourism destination of 2008 and second on a list of most complained about destinations.

The survey was conducted among 1,208 travel agencies operating in Germany. Nine hundred eleven agencies ranked the Spanish islands of Mallorca and Menorca as their "number one" choice. Turkey was chosen by 691 agencies as the second most favored destination for 2008. Greece came third in the survey, with 631 votes. An interesting result was that Italy and Tunisia, which are traditionally favored by many European tourists, were at the bottom of the list, with 133 and 120 votes, respectively. Baraner called Turkey`s second position among the most complained about countries a "paradox," underlining that this is not a new situation. He said that a similar picture had emerged over the last four years. A total of 751 agencies said Tunisia was most complained about tourism destination, followed by Turkey with 552 votes. Baraner also noted another result in the survey -- Turkey was voted the best in terms of prices and quality of service. It also led the list of destinations for families with children. "These rankings clearly show the apparent paradox of being the second most preferred country despite large numbers of complaints, he said. Turkey hosted 23 million tourists in 2007, almost half of which came from Germany and Russia. Fueled by a government decision to decrease the value-added tax (VAT) to 10 percent from 18 percent for tourism investment, the industry is expecting to attract 26 million visitors this year. | |||

The Guide Bodrum is now available at major news stands, in supermarkets and selected bookstores throughout Turkey. The following is the magazine`s Publisher`s Letter highlighting all the wonderful articles that you will be reading about in this issue!
Publisher`s Note
Dear Readers welcome to the annual issue of The Guide Bodrum! I am amazed that it has been 14 years since we started preparing a guide for the pearl of the Aegean region. I am even more excited with this year`s issue. Due to popular demand from our Turkish readers, we have prepared The Guide Bodrum 2007 in Turkish too! In this way, not only will we reach our English speaking Turkish audience, but those who are not bi-lingual as well. I would now like to give you some details on the articles we have prepared for this issue. Before I start, I would like to thank our General Manager & Editor-in-Chief Vildan Yahni and İzzeddin Çalışlar for the wonderful articles they prepared for both issues. The incredible photographs that Bahadır Tanrıöver took during a hectic 4-day photo shoot have added amazing depth to our magazine! We had such a difficult time in deciding which of the 500+ photographs to use, that we added a new section called Snapshots, where you can enjoy Bodrum through photographs before you get on to reading the main articles. Before preparing this year`s issue, Vildan went to Bodrum and literally traveled the entire Peninsula and met with some prominent locals who were very helpful in supplying her with the latest info on happenings around Bodrum. Make sure you check out the Listing Section of The Guide Bodrum, which includes information on some of the "best" that Bodrum has to offer - from eateries and beach & night clubs to shopping opportunities and marinas to some of the best hotels to stay at! Residents of the city will also be happy to note that we have included sections of particular interest to them. During Vildan`s travels around the Peninsula, she noticed that Bodrum is continuing to develop in many ways. The growth in housing developments and the opening of quaint, elegant and trendy boutique bed & breakfast hotels is on the move. A few new noteworthy eateries have also opened, but most importantly the "old-timers" are still there! The Arts & Culture front is also flourishing. A new museum will open in July and some Istanbul based art galleries have moved to Bodrum for the summer and have wonderful exhibits on display at some of the deluxe hotels around the city until the end of September. Our sections Sights & Sounds and Bodrumscope include some of the news on these fronts. Our article titled General Information to "Guide" You in Bodrum will come in handy to first time visitors. Our feature article for this issue is titled A Spin of Bodrum & Its Environs. The article takes you on a tour of the peninsula and includes information on where to sun, eat, stay, get a massage and shop while in Bodrum. We also wanted to share the Other Bodrum with you and seasoned "Other" Bodrum lover and traveler İzzeddin`s suggestions include trips to Milas, Mumcular, Mazı and some other historical sights in close proximity to the city. A trip to Bodrum would be incomplete without taking a Blue Voyage. Our article titled Blue Voyage Extended Destinations will come in handy to first time yacht owners visiting the area from Turkey or abroad. We have "extended" the trip and included information on the nearby Greek Islands as well as Gökova and Göcek further down the gulf. The article is also a good guide for those interested in renting a yacht and wanting to plan their own course. We round out this issue with an article titled Ahmet Ertegün We Remember and Honor You. An icon on the international music scene, Ertegün was also a true Bodrum lover. He was Turkey`s "unofficial" ambassador and put Bodrum on the map long before Bodrum became the Bodrum it is now on the international scene. He passed away in 2006 and we all miss him and will never forget his contributions - not only to the music scene, but also to Bodrum.I would like to end by saying that Bodrum is a lovely place to visit year round. Of course, there is more activity during the summer, but rest assured, no matter when you go, you are bound to enjoy its splendors. Bodrum attracts colorful characters, affords great settings and can provide you with unforgettable memories.

TURKEY WINTER BREAKS!!!
Why not go to Turkey in the winter months? On the plus side, prices for renting villas and apartments are much cheaper! Turkish life also runs at an altogether more relaxed pace. The weather however is variable, but this can be used to your advantage - where you can visit more places like Ephesus where there will be no scorching heat and crowds to attend to! On the down side there will be more road and building maintenance work going on and most swimming pools are emptied. You have to remember that Turkey is very different in the Winter from the Summer months. No matter how big the resort, you can forget the crowds and get to see more of the real Turkey. Points to remember when considering a Winter break is that Turkey does not celebrate Christmas, so do not special Christmas activities. Bodrum for example is a bustling town even in Winter, so if you are used to the Summer hordes then Winter holidaying will seem blissfully peaceful. Off season is a great time to explore the old town and the famous castle without the crowds and with time on your hands theres also the archaeological museum and many other ancient sites to visit.
